  • Disaster In The Gulf

    So I’m listening to the radio this morning and a man by the name of John from Florida is on there telling his story of how Hurricane Katrina has affected him personally.  He goes on to say that his parents, brother & sister and their families all live in Gulfport, MS.  His parents, his brother and sister-n-law and their two boys live in an apartment complex and his sister and her sons live in a home nearby.

    He called his parents on Monday when Katrina was a category 3 to find out if they were leaving the city.  They told him that they couldn’t because “the roads were shut down” where they were.  Early hours of Tuesday morning John learned that Katrina had been upgraded to a category 5 so he again called his parents.  They told him that the weather was getting pretty severe and that they were moving to the apartment above because they had water flooding their apartment.

    This was the last time that John spoke to his dad.

    Being concerned for his family, John loaded up his truck and headed out to Gulfport to find his family members.  On the drive out there he received a call stating that a man and woman had been found, the man was unclothed, and the woman’s ID said that she was his mother.  When he arrived he found his sister and her sons at her boyfriend’s sister’s house a city away.  They were safe…however he had no idea as to what had happened to the rest of his family.

    He continued his search but was unable to access the road to his parent’s apartment complex.  He said that the debris was so bad that the only thing he could compare the damage to was when the U.S. bombed Hiroshima.

    Unable to reach his parent’s home, he began searching shelters and medical facilities.  He was told of a 5 year old boy that was found in that area floating on a piece of debris.  The young boy told rescuers that he was with him mommy, daddy, brother and his grandparents… they “swam to Georgia”.  He went on to state that they had all “drowned”.

    John found the little boy and it was indeed one of his nephews.  He later was told of a woman and small boy who was claiming to be the boy’s mother.  She made her way to the facility where they were and it was indeed his sister-n-law.  She and her youngest son were swept away in the flood waters after placing her other son on the piece of door debris.  She was able to latch onto a door and barricade herself and her son in a location that put them out of harm’s way.  They waited there until late Tuesday afternoon and then made their way through the flood waters to a dry road where she began walking.  Unfortunately she had to take off all of her clothes while in the flood waters because the debris was pulling on the clothes and kept choking her.  She placed her son inside a torn suitcase that she found to keep him as dry as possible while waiting out the storm.

    While walking down the road, she was picked up and taken to a shelter where she learned of her son.

    John is not giving up hope on his parents or brother as of yet.  Even though his parent’s bodies may have already been found, he is determined to find his brother as well (dead or alive) and bring them home with him.

    He’s already taken his sister-n-law and nephews back to Florida and out of the devastation that once was their home.  He’s had to contact friends and co-workers back in Florida to help him get clothing for them all considering they now have nothing.

    John is going back to Mississippi on Friday to find the rest of his family.

    There have been so many stories similar to this one that’s come out of this disaster.  It’s so…so sad.

    John stated that he only told his story on the radio so that people would not make the same choice that his family did.  He said, “if you’re told to get out…then by God GET OUT!! Don’t worry about your house, your dog, or your belongings.  These things are material and can be replaced.  I’ve lost so much…I can’t replace what I’ve lost…it’s invaluable.”

  • OMG…I tell you…if it’s not one thing, it’s another.

    Okay…let me start by saying that the police never found anything or anyone in Caleb’s abduction investigation.

    However, I was able to get the GPS tracking unit for Caleb. It looks like a watch and he doesn’t seem to mind wearing it (thank God).  We have to check the battery on it twice a day to make sure that it’s working okay and the police dept. comes out once a month to change the battery.  We’re told that if Caleb ever comes up missing that when we call 911 they will know by our phone number that it’s Caleb and will start tracking him immediately with the GPS unit.  They said that they can locate him within 3 minutes or so.   That makes me feel a LOT better after this whole ordeal.

    Now…onto the other issue…

    I came home last night and was confronted with this on my television screen!

    Littleton teacher had previous sex assault charge

    and  Paul Johnson  9NEWS Reporter

    LONE TREE – A middle school teacher in the Littleton School District arrested Monday for alleged sexual assault on a child was investigated for the same offense on two previous occasions.

    9NEWS Reporter Paul Johnson says Littleton Public Schools will not allow a teacher to return to work unless he is cleared of the sexual assault charges against him. 4 p.m. August 10, 2005

    The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says in March, Mark Bliss was a suspect in an alleged molestation of boys at a Highlands Ranch swimming pool.  But the case was dropped when deputies couldn’t locate the victims.

    Bliss was also investigated in 2000 for a sexual assault, according to the Highlands Ranch Herald newspaper.  The report says Bliss allegedly walking into a shower stall at the Eastridge Rec Center, took off his bathing suit and touched a 7-year-old boy.  He was eventually acquitted.

    On Tuesday, Mark Bliss was arrested by Lone Tree Police at the South Suburban Ice Rink where he coaches power skating to kids.   Police said they were investigating a report that Bliss had inappropriately touched a child in the pool at the Lone Tree Recreation Center.

    Bliss is a social studies and language arts teacher at Newton Middle School.  He also coached several sports. He has been employed by Littleton Public Schools since 1998.

    The school district says it was aware of the previous allegations against Bliss, but it is forbidden to talk about any job action that may have been taken against him.

    This man teaches at my oldest daughter’s (Dora) school!!! He’s been her teacher for two years now!!

    He even coached Dora’s boyfriend’s (Devin) wrestling team…and Devin’s mom was on the news last night expressing her concern and disgust at the fact that parents weren’t aware of this man’s past while sending their young boys to be in intimate situations with him (i.e. showering in locker rooms etc.) while on sports teams.

    I’m floored by this whole thing.  What in the hell is this world coming to??!

    Now, before anyone says that I’m judging him too quickly and that he hasn’t been convicted of anything…believe me, I understand that.  However, I’m also aware of the fact that LPS couldn’t just release him of his teaching duties because of legality issues…BUT…coaching is not his main position with the school.  He took on the coaching position (in which he has coached many boys sports teams) for extra cash (supposedly)…but I feel that with the allegations as they are, he should’ve at least been relieved of coaching duties!!  OR we (the parents) should have been informed of the allegations that had been brought up against him and been left to make the decision of whether or not we trusted him with our children!

    I just don’t feel that enough has been done in these situations to ensure the safety of our kids.

    After what I’ve been through lately with my son…I don’t take anything for granted and I most certainly don’t trust people the way that I once did.  I can’t…not anymore.

    PS ~ Thank you all for your support and kind words in regards to the situation w/ Caleb.  I appreciate you all very much.

  • You always think…”it won’t happen to me”…but yesterday,it did

    Yesterday, by far, was the worst day of my life.

    At 12:30 yesterday afternoon I received a call that every parent dreads…my autistic son, Caleb, was missing.  Police had been dispatched to my home and were searching for him.  I was about 30 miles south of my home at work at the time.  I dropped everything and drove straight home.

    I tried to call Jason on his cell…but to no avail.  I called my ex (Caleb’s dad) and told him that Caleb was missing and he left work and headed over to my house as well.

    I continued to try to get a hold of Jason…but I just got voicemail.  I left messages and kept trying to call him back.  I called the house, talked to my daughter (Dora) and my mom to find out what had happened.

    Apparently, before Caleb got home from school…my mom ran over to the store to grab some items for dinner leaving Dora, Corin and Jonah at home.  Dora got Caleb off the bus at 11:10am and into the house locking the door behind them (we lock all the doors when Caleb is home so that we can keep a better eye on him).  Dora then checked on Jonah and Corin, who were downstairs playing.  She went into the kitchen to take her medication (antibiotic for an ear infection) and then called for Caleb as she was walking through the dining room.  When she got to the front door the key was in the door and it was unlocked and ajar.  Caleb was gone.

    She ran out of the house and up the street and couldn’t find him.  She continued to look for him around the block and still didn’t see him.   So she went to a neighbor’s house to get help.  From there she called the police.

    I was about a block away from the house when I got a call from my ex telling me that the police had found Caleb…he was OK…but he had been stripped of all of this clothing.

    I got home and was immediately greeted by an officer who shoved a paper in my face telling me she needed me to fill out a statement.  All I wanted to know was where my son was and was he OK.  She told me that he was being “checked out” by the rescue team and that my mom was with him and they would be bringing him home shortly.

    I went inside to see my other kids and talk to them.  A few minutes later the ambulance arrived with Caleb and my mom inside.  I ran out to the ambulance and they opened the doors.  My baby was wrapped in a blanket and indeed had no clothes on.  He put his little arms around my neck and I held him tight…clinging to his little body thanking God that he was brought back to me.  My ex and I took him inside and checked him over to see if he had been injured in any way or violated.  He seemed, for the most part, to be unharmed.  He had what appeared to be grab marks on his left forearm and some abrasions on his right arm and elbow.

    We couldn’t see, at that time, any other signs of injury.  We got him dressed and talked more with the officers.  At first they thought that he’d walked to the area where they found him…but I told them that it wasn’t possible.  Caleb wouldn’t go near a busy street…he’s too scared of the cars.  Not only that…his feet were clean and there were no sign of abrasions or redness on his feet that would indicate that he’d been walking on hot concrete or asphalt…and there would be on a day that it was 98 degrees outside.

    Not to mention the fact that Caleb would never take his clothes off outside…especially his shoes.  He doesn’t like going anywhere without shoes…not even in the house.

    We wound up taking him to Children’s Hospital around 2:30pm to be fully examined and to collect any forensic evidence that may be on him.  He fell asleep on the way there…poor baby.  While there and waiting on the criminalist to arrive, the detectives, Jason and I went through different scenarios that may have occurred. We came to the conclusion, after the detectives had been observing Caleb for several hours that someone had to have abducted him and then let him go.  They probably tried to change his clothes in order to avoid an Amber Alert and he freaked out on them and they realized that he wasn’t “normal” and decided that they may be in over their head.  Speculation I know…but the police were unable to find any of his clothes and if he did walk all that way and took off his own clothes…the clothes would probably be in a pile somewhere.

    However, even after having the K-9 unit out searching last night…the clothes have not been found.

    Caleb underwent a rape kit test and examination.  They took DNA samples and swapped the scrapes and such for foreign DNA.  During the exam we noticed a bruise had surfaced on his back next to his spine.  So they swabbed that too.  He was a good boy through it all and I had to help out with collecting evidence off of him because they didn’t want to traumatize him more than he’d already been.

    We got him home around 9pm.  He ate, since he hadn’t eaten anything since 7am that morning…watched a movie for a bit and then finally fell asleep.

    The K-9 unit arrived around 9:30 or so and searched the area until after midnight.  They found nothing…Caleb’s scent was lost just past our neighbor’s property.

    We believe that Caleb went outside, wandered over to the neighbor’s yard…and was grabbed by someone.  That they tried to change his clothes…but he freaked out…so they shoved him out of the car.

    I’m just glad that he’s home…that he’s alive….and that he’s OK.

    Although…I pray to God that the police catch whoever did this to my baby.

    UPDATE:

    7/16/05

    Thank you all for your kind words and support.  You have NO idea how much it means to me…to my family.  So thank you.

    The police were at my home again first thing yesterday morning.  They had 50 officers searching my neighborhood for Caleb’s clothes and talking to every person they could, to see if anyone knew anything or saw anything.  They came up with close to nothing.  His clothes still have not been found.  I believe that the clothes will never be found…I think that the clothes were taken by the abductees and have probably been destroyed by now.

    If the clothes are outside…it has already rained and any forensic evidence that would have been found on them are now lost.  I keep praying that whoever did this doesn’t do it to some other child…or come back for mine.  I just want the police to find them…put them away so they may never hurt another child again.  No parent should ever have to go through this…and unfortunately…too many do it every day.

    One of the most frustrating things about having an autistic child is that he can’t tell me what happened…or who did this to him.  I’m keeping my eyes and ears open with him anyway…hoping that he will give us some kind of clue as to what ocurred….something….anything.

  • I hope you all are well   I just thought that I’d stop by and share this with you all…

    My oldest daughter, Dora won 1st place in a poetry contest!!  Here’s the poem…

    A Gift

    I sit

    Waiting

    Watching

    Making no movement whatsoever

    Scanning the horizon for something

    Never

    Ever

    To be

    For my brother to be so called “normal”

    To not be “cursed”

    Some would call it Autism

    A curse to some

    To others they call it retardation

    But to me

    I call it something

    Beautiful

  • Post Follow-up Update

    Anyway…so yeah, Friday morning sucked royally…  It didn’t get much better in the afternoon either.  I went to the doctor for my followup visit.  Although the lump in my breast turned out to be nothing (thank God)…they did have some bad news for me in another form.  I’m borderline diabetic.  My insulin levels are SO out of wack!!

    So they’ve put me on medication to try to help that regulate…and in the meantime I have to go back in for bloodwork in six weeks and return for another followup in 6 months.

    I’ve had a feeling that something wasn’t right with me for a while now…and even had stated that I bet my insulin wasn’t right…so I wasn’t totally shocked with this news.  However, it didn’t make it any easier to hear.  The fortunate thing is that it’s correctable…since it was caught before becoming full blown diabeties.

    Well…that’s the update.

    Please remember…anyone wanting to know where I will be primarily blogging from now on…email me. Thanks to all of those who have already done so…I don’t want to lose touch with any of you.

  • Just a note to let you all know what happened at the ultrasound yesterday.  The radiologist said that as far as he can tell everything “looks normal…BUT, that if something is wrong the bloodwork will show it”.  So…I guess I have to wait until Friday to find out any more information.

    You KNOW how much I just love waiting.

    To all you mommy’s…I hope that you had a nice Mother’s Day!  Sorry I didn’t post, but Xanga is getting on my nerves as of late.

    Not the people that I know on here and post on here…but the technology (or lack there of I should say)…it’s ticking me off.  I mean, I’ve paid for my premium (well, Jason did) and I can’t even use it to it’s full potential.

    SO…I may not be posting here very often anymore.  It makes me sad to say that…I’ve made so many friends here, but I’m so fed up with everything going wrong here.

    I hope that you all understand.

    If you want to know where I will be blogging…please email me and I will let you know.

    I will post an update of what the results are from my doctor’s appointment…I wouldn’t leave you all hangin’.  Really.

  • The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be!  And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be.  Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810.  And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico.

    So, why Cinco de Mayo?  And why should Americans savor this day as well?  Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.

    The French had landed in Mexico (along with Spanish and English troops) five months earlier on the pretext of collecting Mexican debts from the newly elected government of democratic President (and Indian) Benito Juarez.  The English and Spanish quickly made deals and left.  The French, however, had different ideas.

    Under Emperor Napoleon III, who detested the United States, the French came to stay.  They brought a Hapsburg prince with them to rule the new Mexican empire.  His name was Maximilian; his wife, Carolota.  Napoleon’s French Army had not been defeated in 50 years, and it invaded Mexico with the finest modern equipment and with a newly reconstituted Foreign Legion.  The French were not afraid of anyone, especially since the United States was embroiled in its own Civil War.

    The French Army left the port of Vera Cruz to attack Mexico City to the west, as the French assumed that the Mexicans would give up should their capital fall to the enemy — as European countries traditionally did.

    Under the command of Texas-born General Zaragosa, (and the cavalry under the command of Colonel Porfirio Diaz, later to be Mexico’s president and dictator), the Mexicans awaited.  Brightly dressed French Dragoons led the enemy columns.  The Mexican Army was less stylish.

    General Zaragosa ordered Colonel Diaz to take his cavalry, the best in the world, out to the French flanks.  In response, the French did a most stupid thing; they sent their cavalry off to chase Diaz and his men, who proceeded to butcher them.  The remaining French infantrymen charged the Mexican defenders through sloppy mud from a thunderstorm and through hundreds of head of stampeding cattle stirred up by Indians armed only with machetes.

    When the battle was over, many French were killed or wounded and their cavalry was being chased by Diaz’ superb horsemen miles away.  The Mexicans had won a great victory that kept Napoleon III from supplying the confederate rebels for another year, allowing the United States to build the greatest army the world had ever seen.  This grand army smashed the Confederates at Gettysburg just 14 months after the battle of Puebla, essentially ending the Civil War.

    Union forces were then rushed to the Texas/Mexican border under General Phil Sheridan, who made sure that the Mexicans got all the weapons and ammunition they needed to expel the French.  American soldiers were discharged with their uniforms and rifles if they promised to join the Mexican Army to fight the French.  The American Legion of Honor marched in the Victory Parade in Mexico, City.

    It might be a historical stretch to credit the survival of the United States to those brave 4,000 Mexicans who faced an army twice as large in 1862.  But who knows?

    In gratitude, thousands of Mexicans crossed the border after Pearl Harbor to join the U.S. Armed Forces.  As recently as the Persian Gulf War, Mexicans flooded American consulates with phone calls, trying to join up and fight another war for America.

    Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends are, and neither do Americans.  That’s why Cinco de Mayo is such a party — A party that celebrates freedom and liberty.  There are two ideals which Mexicans and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect, ever since the 5th of May, 1862.  VIVA! el CINCO DE MAYO!!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    So…after a long day yesterday, I came home very tired and laid down for a bi…trying to rest.  I even popped in my new DVD that Jason bought me.  About half way through it…the phone rings.  I look at the caller ID and it’s a pay phone number…so I’m thinking “who in the hell?”.
    I answer, “hello?”
    ….it’s Jason, “Hi honey.  I need you to come get me.”
    me: “Why? What happened? And why are you calling from a pay phone?”
    him: “Nothing…I just need you to come get me…and I couldn’t use my cell phone.”
    me: “What…did you lock your keys in the car or something?”
    him: “Umm…actually? Yes…in the trunk.”
    me: “How do you lock your keys in the trunk?”
    him: “Well…I don’t normally put my book bag in the trunk, but I did…and well, my keys were in there…”
    me: “I see…so you need me to bring you your spare key?”
    him: “yes…please”
    The conversation is edited a bit…but that’s the gist of the whole thing.   But regardless…I had to get out of my comfy bed and go give my hubby his key to his car.  My tummy was hurting SO bad by this point…but I went anyway.  I didn’t want him to have to take a bus and then walk home…especially if it wasn’t necessary.
    So…after coming back from my little rescue mission…we arrived just in time to see Scott Savol get kicked off of American Idol (it’s about time!!!).  I don’t think my ears could take one more week of him…besides, he should’ve been gone weeks ago.  Just my opinion.
    After that… it was back to bed and back to my movie!  I watched the special features…but fell asleep…so I shut it off and passed out for the night.
    Exciting eh? Yeah well…that’s my life.
  • The past 24 hours has been a bit rough on me…I admit it.  Yesterday I went in for my annual with my gynecologist.  Yeah…being a woman is so much fun.  Anyway…I wasn’t looking forward to that to begin with…but I had no idea what I was in for.
    I’ve gained weight again.   And …as if that wasn’t enough…they found a lump in my breast too.  It’s not big…but it’s painful.  I thought I felt it when I did my self exam last month and was going to ask about it at my appointment…but I didn’t need to because she found it rather quickly.
    So, now I’m going in for an ultrasound to see what it is next Tuesday.  Hopefully it will give us some answers so at least I know what I’m dealing with.  I hate not knowing.
    I went into the lab this morning and had 7 vials of blood drawn for testing.  They ordered “everything under the sun” according to the lab technician.  Well…at least I know that they are actually trying to find out what’s wrong with me.  My doctor feels that the weight gain may be due to more than just my hypothyroidism.  Hence why all the tests were ordered.
    So now…I wait.
    Did I mention that I hate not knowing?
    All of that being said…my youngest daughter Corin is sick.  I awoke at about 4am this morning to the news that she was ill…all the signs of the stomach flu.   So…I’ve been up since then and dealt with my poor little girl as she cried because her tummy hurt so bad.  I called and checked in on her not too long ago…at least she’s finally stopped vomiting.
    Watch…I’ll get that next…I always do.  Especially when I haven’t gotten enough rest.
    Oh well…as my dear friend Eeyore would say.  All part of being “Mommy” I suppose.
    Speaking of “Mommy”…Mother’s Day is this Sunday.  My wonderful hubby bought me an early Mother’s Day gift…the special edition of The Phantom of the Opera!!   So at least I can watch that tonight and take my mind off things a bit before I pass out from exhaustion right?
  • Ugh…
    …I don’t want to work today
    …I’m tired
    …I have to go to the doctor for my annual visit in about an hour
    …they will bitch at me about my weight…yet again
    …they’ll advise me on more weight loss programs…yet…again (as if I haven’t already tried them all)
    …they’ll run more blood tests…yet…again
    …they’ll determine that my hypothyroidism is the cause of my weight problems…yet….again
    Ever feel like you’re stuck in that movie “Groundhog Day”?
  • Monday Ramblings…
    It’s been snowing here for the past week …on and off, but it’s much colder than normal for this time of year.  Normally March is our snowiest month in the Rockies…but April has been this year.  Now it’s the 2nd of May and it’s a whole high of 48° F here today.   Depressing eh?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    So anyway… last Friday Jason and I attended his Initiation Ceremony into Kappa Delta Pi – the international honor society in education at (to correct my last post) Metro State College of Denver.  I’m very proud of my hubby to be accepted into this honor society.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Well…because it snowed this last weekend and was cold outside…we spent a lot of time inside, I wound up watching a bit of television on Saturday and found myself watching the Food Network.  They have some really cool shows on there I tell you!!  Now, anyone who knows me knows that I love to cook…especially new recipes.  So while watching this with my daughters, we came up with some ideas for dinner yesterday.  I made some new recipes…broccoli and bow tie pasta in a lemon/garlic sauce (yummy), which we wound up having for lunch yesterday afternoon…and homemade chicken parmesan and fried mozzarella sticks with homemade marinara sauce (double yummy).  The mozzarella sticks – the first batch didn’t turn out the way I had intended…however, the taste was phenomenal…they were a bit over cooked and melted. Oops.   But they got better as I went along.   The chicken parmesan (which Dora helped me make) was awesome!! Absolutely wonderful!  I made a nice tomato/basil salad with it and it was just lovely.
    Of course, now I’m looking for more new recipes on old favorites that we love so much.  I do this from time to time…not only to give us a new spin on menu choices, but to also see what else I can get Caleb to eat since he’s the finicky one in the family.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Let’s see…as you all know I am a woman who wears many hats in my household (i.e. chef, doctor, hair dresser, stylist, pet groomer, maid, laundry service, dishwasher, babysitter, referee, translator…etc.).  Well, this past weekend I was mainly pet groomer and chef.  As my hubby was so kind to point out, I didn’t get the VCR repaired (oh forgot to mention I’m also the repair-person).  Hmm…well…I was damn tired yesterday after grooming Ginger (my cocker/springer/english spaniel mix) since that took me several hours to finish.  And after I cooked dinner, from scratch…which was also a bit time consuming and doing the dishes and baking a batch of peanut butter/chocolate chip cookies, after which I cleaned up my mess as well….I was pretty much done for the night!

    So I’m sorry honey, I didn’t get the VCR fixed yesterday…but you know what?  I also didn’t get the laundry done or the puppy bathed…so I guess you can fire me if ya want.   He wouldn’t do that…’cuz that would mean he’d have to do it all…and well…that’s just not happening!   He helps…but he’s got way too much on his plate to take on all of that on top of everything else.   But I’m not complaining…really!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    One other thing…what in the HELL is going on with my pictures here on Xanga!?  Everytime I turn around…pics that I’ve had save on my Xanga for like forever…are all of a sudden GONE!!!   Now…some of my pics that I posted from the trip…they are listed on my pictures database…but that are not showing up!!  What the HELL Xanga? I want my pics back!!
    Okay…I’m done babbling now.  Have a great day!!
