  • Barenaked & Barely Breathing

Now anyone who has ever gone to an event out at Red Rocks Amphitheater knows that in order to get into the venue, you first have to hike up the side of this enormous rock.  We’re talking a very steep incline that takes you up the side and around into the seating area.

I know that I’m not in the best shape…hell, I’m fat people!  But even I have never had a terrible time getting up into Red Rocks.  However, last night was a different story altogether.

I was doing just fine going up the first portion of the ramp until about half way and then couldn’t catch my breathe…at all.  So I stopped at the platform (there’s three along the way) to attempt to get my breathe back before moving on.  It wound up being a bigger struggle than I imagined…in fact, it was extremely difficult for me.

I figured it was just because I haven’t been at that altitude in a while nor have I been extremely active.  Like I said, I’m not exactly in shape.

I had to stop several more times before reaching the main level for seating.  Of course, we were in the 51st row which meant I had a lot more stairs to climb in order to reach my final seating destination.

We eventually got there, but I was exhausted!!

Jason went to get us some refreshments while I sat, rested and enjoyed the view of natural beauty that surrounded me…and of course, people watched!  After a few minutes I was feeling much better and had settled down a bit.  We sat and waited for the opening act to begin.

A gentleman, whose name was Mark something or other…began to play his guitar on center stage.  He didn’t even introduce himself until after his first song.  I thought this a bit strange, but hey…who am I right?

While he’s playing his diddy, I’m paying attention to the skies above us.  It had been raining off and on for over 2 hours or so and the cloud cover was still quite thick.  The wind had kicked up a bit and was cooling me down quite nicely after my hike from the parking lot.

It sprinkled a bit here and there, but fortunately for us the weather was being generous that evening.

After about 4 songs the opening act was complete and the stage crew finished setting up for Alanis.  When she finally came on she did so with enthusiasm and vigor!

Her show was very energetic and quite entertaining!  I don’t know a great number of her songs, but I know a few.  There were quite a few people however, mostly women, that knew every word to every song that she played and sang them loud, proud and passionately.

Before singing her final song, she invited the boys from Barenaked Ladies on the stage to join her.  It was fun to see them all singing together and interacting on stage.  They all seem to enjoy each other’s company and looked like that were having a wonderful time.

After the song ended, Steve and Ed from BNL stayed on stage a moment to tell everyone that they’d be back out to play in about 30 minutes.  The crowd was displeased with that news…seeing that we’d have to wait another half an hour to see them, but they said, “hey…they need to set up our drums and such before we can play you guys”.

Yes…they did a complete change out of stage decor and just as they’d said, after about 30 minutes BNL took the stage.  The crowd were on their feet and cheering!

They played for over 2 hours.  Many songs from their new album…but a number of old favorites as well.  One thing that they didn’t do was play the two songs that have had radio airplay recently.  I read somewhere that they like to play songs that most people aren’t as familiar with while on tour…something about they want to give the crowds more than just their hits.  That’s cool and the show was incredible!!

Steve and Ed were quite entertaining by themselves and I think they may have missed their calling as comedians, but the concert overall is one of the best that I’ve been to in a long time.  If they come to your city and you enjoy their music…go see them!!  You won’t be sorry that you did…I guarantee it!

  • What a great place to listen to music in Glad you had a great time

  • sounds like a great time!

  • Wow … just the amphitheater looks worth the trip … breathlessness and all! What a beautiful place.

  • Wow I don’t think Iwould enjoy that huge walk

Lol idon’t like when bands play new songs, becuase I don’t like songs the first time I hear them, then I get bored when i don’t know the song. I’m weird like that, I don’t even like concerts that much, its pathetic but i prefer their songs on their cd, and they sound different in person, plus its so loud. Well if you can actually sit its fine, i’m not a fan of thsoe concerts were everyone stands becuase being that i’m short i can’t see a thing, so its pointless for me.

Anyways i’m glad you had fun!

  • Glad you had a great time..did you know that Larry aka Phuyuck knows Ed personally? I just found out not long ago..apparently their Moms worked together!

  • What a beautiful place for a concert. It’s too bad it takes an aerobic workout to get to your seats though.

The concert sounds like it was better than great. ‘Love the pictures too!

  • Whats up Maria…Wow what a beautiful place, but there would be no way on this green earth that I would be able to climb all those stairs either…shoot if it were me, when I ordered tickets I would have told them I was handicapped and that I needed seats close instead of hiking all the way up to the north 40.  Glad you and Jason enjoyed ure concert though ;0)  Take care…~*Keri*~

  • ahh red rocks. you better bet i own the Dave Matthews Band Live at Red Rocks cd

  • Sounds like other than getting breathless you had a pretty good time!  Sounds wonderful.  Do you know I am 44 years old and have never been to a concert?  Now mind you I met the group Santana and they gave me 10 free tickets with backstage passes to party with them after the concert, however my friend gave all the tickets but mine to her friends and her brother, so I told her to take mine to.  I never went.  Dang it. lol  It is funny we have an area here in Az that is also called Red Rock and then we have Sedona Az that really is red rock and pretty awesome.  Thanks for the visits and you know you are always welcome to any of my animations including Eeyore. lol  Have a great day and a wonderful tomorrow ! ! !   Much love and many hugs ! ! ! !  Sleep with the angels and wake up feeling fully rested and ready for a new day ! ! !

  • sounds like you had a great time.

  • glad you had a good time :)

  • THANKS!  Yea I’ll wait one more day and see if the meds work, if not….it’s on to plan B.

    Have a good day!

  • I’d never heard of this amphitheater before, but it sounds like quite the marvel! I probably would have been huffing and puffing during that climb as well since I’ve oput on some weight over the past year.

I’ve never been much into Alanis Morissette, but I have enjoyed some material of BNL (and both are Canadian, like me! – - woohoo)!! Ed is indeed quite the card. He is in fact from my hometown and I’ve known him since he was born (his family and my family had connections while I was growing up).

Glad you enjoyed the show, and I enjoyed reading your story about the whole event. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

  • Another wonderful account, my love. ‘Twas a great evening

  • sounds like you had great fun.

  • Hello!  Larry aka ‘Phuyuck’ gave me the link to your blog… I’m a HUGE fan of Barenaked Ladies… and I just went to see them and Alanis back on July 20th in Noblesville, Indiana.  This is the second time I’ve seen BNL in concert… they put on the best live show I’ve ever been to.  Love ‘em… LOVE ‘em!  Yes, Steve and Ed are SOOOO funny, lol.  They cracked me up like the whole two hours they were playing.

You are right.  They didn’t play their two newest singles… “Another Postcard” or “Test 1-2-3.”  But.. like you said, they try to play some old stuff… which they did… one or two songs I was unfamiliar with.  They did do two of my personal faves, though… “What A Good Boy” and “Call And Answer”… Alanis came out and did “Call And Answer” with them, which was cool.  I went to http://www.barenakedladies.com and downloaded my concert.  I just had to have it… so I could play it and listen to all the people screaming and go, “Hey… I’m one of those screaming fans.”

I really do like Alanis Morissette too, but I went for Barenaked Ladies.  I love ‘Jagged Little Pill.’  That’s her greatest album, in my opinion.  I have her others… with the exception of her brand new one that I haven’t purchased yet… She played second at our show.  It was late, I was tired, had to get up early for work the next day… so we left after 6 of her songs.  I had to hear “Head Over Feet”… then we left.  Great concert.  I bought the Au Naturale event tee too, lol… so, yeah… I’m just trying to figure out how my grandparents will react to it, lol… Alanis and five guys naked on a t-shirt.

  • Dang! what fun! I’d love to got to RR now but I’ll make sure to put in a cardio workout or two on the schedule before I attempt it! :)
