I need to vent…this may get ugly
Well that was fun…NOT. I just got out of the president of the company’s office. I was brought in there and completely blindsided by my boss and the president on an issue that I obviously had no clue about.
Apparently there have been several complaints made toward me and my “demands” in regards to compliancy issues for the company. Okay…that’s fine. However, no one bothered to say a word to me about it, including my boss, until it got to this point. So I basically got my ass chewed for not being “tolerant enough” toward the field employees. So according to them, I’m apparently doing my job a bit too well.
Being a compliancy officer is not an easy task. I pretty much live in a black and white world when it comes to my job…and they want me to put gray into that aspect, which is easier said than done. However, I’ll do whatever they tell me to…but that’s usually all that I do on a daily basis anyway and then I get bitched out by someone for it. Basically I’m in a “damned if I do…damned if I don’t” situation. I hate that.
They proceded to inform me that people are saying that they don’t even want to call in and talk to me because I’m “difficult” or “not obliging enough” for them. This stems from me just not babying people. I can’t help that. I’m never rude to them or disrespectful…but I have a job to do the same as them and I just want as much help from them as I give to them. Although…this is obviously too much to ask because I just got done defending myself for over an hour.
So…fine. I’m told I need “improvement” in this area. Ok. We all need some improvement. So I guess I’m just supposed to not care as much about doing my job as I thought I should. I also was told that I take things “too personally”. Okay…well how else are you supposed to take people calling in and complaining to you on a daily basis because they feel that they are exempt to compliancies that are placed on all of us by federal and state regulations…OR…being called every name in the book while being yelled at for something that you really weren’t even involved in..but apparently are now responsible for. I guess….I’m to blame because I kept my mouth shut and let them finish what they had to say before telling them that I would help them. They are offended by this? And yet…I’m not supposed to take the allegations that have been made towards me personally?
I’m very angry right now…but more than that…I’m hurt. I work my ass off for this company and have for almost ten years! I bend over backwards to help the field employees out as much as I can. I train over the phone…talk them through filling out forms…make copies of paperwork for them…do research for them…help them out with computer problems…listen to them vent…and on and on. However…they’ve repaid me by making illigitimate allegations toward me…put words in mouth…and said that I’m not “cooperative enough”….or “tolerant enough” toward them. So now I’m being asked to “improve” my attitude…and they’re being asked to change nothing.
Fine…so be it.
I do not get paid enough for this shit….no one does.

That’s such stupid behaviour on their part. I hope you turned around and told your boss that if you do slack off and ignore their laziness, it’s his ass on the line when your company isn’t toeing the line laid down by the LAW!
We have to be compliant with the Freedom of Information Act as of next Jan. Our company has gone out and hired a lovely compliance officer, and we’re all bending over backwards to make sure we’re ready on the day. I’m sure there’ll be issues, but at least everyone realises that she’s doing it to PROTECT us from potential litigation!
Wow my love… I had no idea. That sucks– I wish you could find another, better job.
I love you
Well that’s a crock. I’m sorry!
Things somewhat a calmer at my job since Mary moved on to Best Buy, but I’m still tired of dealing with the public–or rather the ones who act up. And since I’m non management, usually the other stuff hits people above me. Though everyones seems to think or assume I’m a manager or specialist or running things. Haha. Why is that?
I hope things get better for you soon or at least the other people wake/wise up.
You possible may find this amusing, but if you want a classic example of me being moi—go back and see what I wrote in response to you comment. You left a simple comment about glad I enjoyed the movie, and I write the equivalent of a whole blog of problems in grade and high school. Haha.
Arrghh!! Ahoy! Shiver me timbers!
~ ponders and agrees with Heather ~
I’m floored. You’re a compliancy officer not a near-compliancy officer. Your bosses are on crack and the field employees are a bunch of cry babies. (How’s that for supporting a friend!?!) I’m sorry they blindsided you, that’s always unpleasent. A little warning from your boss would have been nice, huh. Take care hon, and know you’ve got plenty of support from your friends.
Sounds like total lack of appreciation. Maybe it is time for you to get your resume out to some other companies
I agree with Nanny my friend. have a great weekend..
My heart goes out to you. I was in the same positon so I just started my own business! My husband gave me a *great* book called “48 Days to the Work You Love” by Dan Miller and Dave Ramsey. Dave Ramsey gives wonderful Christian financial advice on talk radio so you may have heard of him. Anywho, the book really gave me the courage to strike out on my own. You may not open up shop for yourself, but you can find a way to amke your living and be happy. I know it’s hard to leave something you’ve done for a decade, but being miserable at work definitely bleeds into your personal life and personal lives already have some bumps of their own! Good Luck to you!!
P.S. Come see what this book has helped me build in less than 2 months! http://www.pick-a-puppy.com
I don’t miss that whole corporate bullshit – either I miss it in my area or I dont have to deal with it, thank god. Hugs you big
you know we have a policy at work ….
Suck it up
move on
I would have told the “boss ” that same damn thing …
I have no bullshit tolerance and would have walked the hell out
When people call in at work …
they either suck it up or fuck off
we got shit to run ….
The boss needs to pull his head out of his ass …
of course I would have said that too ….
Honey , let me talk to them for ya
Ya got me all stirred up now
hope it works out
I am a little late in responding, but I toatally agree with DreamsQuest.
That is the point where I would have either gotten fired or fought my boss… Letting him win of course. Have you seen Fight Club? Jack was a compliance and liability officer, and… Well, we all know what happened to him.
What it comes down to, is, we can only go so far before somebody gets a fork in their eye. Your boss’ total lack of recognition of what you have accomplished for the company is not being recognized. I remember a poster a friend had that exclaimed something like, “When I do something right, nobody notices. But when I do wrong, everyone does…” It had a kitten on it… It was kinda cute lol…
Although I see nothing YOU did wrong, the saying still sorta fits. I remember what it was like to work my ass off, doing OT and not getting paid for it because I thought it was for the good of the company, only to have them come back on me, saying that there was a Burger King cup that was on the grounds that I didn’t pick up. So I need to “manage my time” better.
In the end, I was avenged. I hope you are too
